CLINICIAN SCIENTIST
Dr. Ariel Dalfen is Head, Perinatal Mental Health Program and Head, Perinatal Mental Health Telemedicine Program at Mount Sinai Hospital and an Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, University of Toronto.
Her research focuses on the use of modern technologies and community collaboration to improve access to care for women with perinatal mental health concerns. She has been recently funded to start a telemedicine program and for a project using text messaging technology for mental health screening in new mothers. Other research interests include the impact of sleep deprivation/disruption in new mothers and anxiety and depression in the perinatal population.
She was recognized by the American Psychiatric Association with the Janssen Institute on Psychiatric Services Award as well as the GlaxoWellcome Fellowship Award. She has consulted provincially, nationally and internationally on issues relating to mental health needs in pregnancy and postpartum.

Major Research Activities
Dr. Dalfen is leading an initiative in the use of text messaging to improve mental health screening in new mothers. She is also leading a telemedicine program and its evaluation. Dr. Dalfen is part of a national group examining neuordevelopmental risk for anxiety and mood disorders in pregnancy and post-partum period, as well as the impact of maternal and paternal (concurrent) postpartum depression in the family.
