SENIOR CLINICIAN SCIENTIST
Dr. Richard Kirsch is a Gastrointestinal Pathologist at Mount Sinai Hospital and a Professor of Pathology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto.
He obtained his medical degree and PhD from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he also undertook his specialty training in Anatomic Pathology. After a Fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at the University of Toronto, he was appointed as a Staff Pathologist at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Kirsch’s primary research interest is in the field of colorectal cancer (CRC), with a special interest in prognostic factors such as venous invasion, tumour budding and novel tumour grading systems. Other interests include inflammatory bowel disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
At a Glance
His work has drawn attention to the underreporting of venous invasion in CRC, methods to improve its detection, and specific features of venous invasion that are associated with adverse oncologic outcomes.
He helped to develop an evidence-based method for the assessment of tumor budding in CRC, which is now used as the international standard.
He is an expert panel member for International Collaboration of Cancer Reporting (ICCR) CRC Dataset, an internationally standardized and evidence-based dataset for the pathology reporting of CRC.
Major Research Activities
Ongoing research projects involve risk prediction in CRC including the role of artificial intelligence.
